The city: Burgos
Founded in 884 by Earl Diego Porcelos, during the rule of Alfonso III, the city of Burgos displays the influences that its founders have instilled over the centuries. The whole city has unique corners, squares and narrow streets, and a beauty enhanced not only by its monuments, but also by the beautiful parks which lend themselves to a stroll and offer visitors a multitude of delights.
From the hill on which the Castle stands, which offers wonderful views over the city, Burgos seems well within reach, with its network of old districts and with the Cathedral as pièce de résistance. The Cathedral towers over us with its splendid mixture of tall and short turrets and spires, with most impressive crafted stone roofs that tail off to the clear, blue skies of Castile.
Nearby stand the Gothic churches of San Estéban, San Gil, San Nicolás and Santa Águeda; a little further away, San Lesmes and on the outskirts of the city, the splendid Real Monasterio de las Huelgas area and, even further out, as if lost in the depths of green pine forests, the Cartuja de Miraflores.
