The City: Burgos
Founded in 884 by Earl Diego Porcelos, during the rule of Alfonso III, the city of Burgos displays the influences that its founders have instilled over the centuries. The whole city has unique corners, squares and narrow streets, and a beauty enhanced not only by its monuments, but also by the beautiful parks which lend themselves to a stroll and offer visitors a multitude of delights.
From the hill on which the Castle stands, which offers wonderful views over the city, Burgos seems well within reach, with its network of old districts and with the Cathedral as pièce de résistance. The Cathedral towers over us with its splendid mixture of tall and short turrets and spires, with most impressive crafted stone roofs that tail off to the clear, blue skies of Castile.
Nearby stand the Gothic churches of San Estéban, San Gil, San Nicolás and Santa Águeda; a little further away, San Lesmes and on the outskirts of the city, the splendid Real Monasterio de las Huelgas area and, even further out, as if lost in the depths of green pine forests, the Cartuja de Miraflores.

Further informationHuman Evolution Museum in Burgos
The museum is the result of the designation of World Heritage status for the archaeological sites in the Sierra de Atapuerca in the year 2000. The huge volume of scientific information furnished from the excavations every year and the eagerness of the research team co-directors to share their findings with the wider public reflect the close relationship between the archaeological sites and the museum, and with the villages in the Atapuerca Cultural Space some 15 kilometres from Burgos.
This project, which combines science and public dissemination within a cultural context, is the great contribution of the Autonomous Community of Castille-León to international knowledge on the subject of human evolution. The city’s contribution consisted of pledging its support for the initiative and offering the historic Solar de Caballería site for conversion into the Evolution Cultural Centre. The architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg has created a bold design which springs from a firm commitment to nature, archaeology and the landscape of the Sierra. These elements are evident in the way the different volumes are articulated and in the clearly defined educational areas of the museum.
Cathedral
One of the most beautiful examples of Gothic art, this monument has earned the title Patrimonio de la Humanidad in 1984. More than a monument, the Cathedral is a living temple, dedicated to worship and oratory, which has seen different art forms through the ages, enhancing and solemnising events, worship and Christian life.

Xacobeo 2010
This Holy Year offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the Camino de Santiago as a place of pilgrimage and a meeting point for people of different nations that has become a symbol of fraternity over the centuries and a corner stone of an awareness of Europe, as affirmed by the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord won in 2004.
The Holy Year Xacobeo 2010 is very important as it symbolises the end of a cycle which has been particularly prominent for the number of pilgrims who have followed the Camino de Santiago over the years. Given the leap years, the Feast of St. James on 25th July falls on a Sunday every 11, 6, 5, 6 and then 11 years. So there won’t be another ‘Jacobeo’ until 2021.
In order to obtain the jubilee, all pilgrims must honour the three traditions:
- Visit the grave of the Apostle in the Cathedral and pray.
- Receive the Sacrament of Confession (either in the Cathedral or anywhere else, two weeks earlier or afterwards).
- Receive communion.
This indulgence is applicable to the deceased. Jubilee indulgences are granted once a day under the following conditions:
- Visiting the Cathedral while praying.
- Receiving the Sacraments of Confession (two weeks earlier or afterwards) and the Holy Communion.
The Xacobeo 2010 programme has been designed to satisfy the cultural needs of different audiences and different ages. Large and small scale shows, musical performances and projects are being organised covering a range of artistic disciplines: photography, animation and film, and exhibitions.
